Spatial patterns of tree recruitment in a relict population of Pinus uncinata: forest expansion through stratified diffusion

چکیده
The dynamics of tree populations depend on spatial patterns of seed production and recruitment. These patterns result from the succession of different processes, including seed arrival, seedling emergence, establishment and growth (Schupp & Fuentes, 1995). While spatial patterns of seed arrival are determined by the mechanisms of seed dispersal (Nathan & Muller-Landau, 2000), those related to recruitment depend on the interaction of multiple abiotic and biotic factors (Clark et al., 1998, 1999). For instance, spatial patterns of seed rain may depend on the location of parents, but seedling distribution will be affected more by the presence of suitable microsites that control germination and seedling survival. The seminal work of Grubb (1977) emphasized the relevance of the regeneration niche for understanding how Unidad de Recursos Forestales, CITA, Gobierno de Aragón, Zaragoza, Spain, Departament d’Ecologia, Facultat de Biologia, Universitat de Barcelona, Barcelona, Spain, Department of Zoology, University of Toronto, Toronto, Ontario, Canada and Department of Biology, Western Illinois University, Macomb, IL, USA

Regional tree line dynamics in response to global change in the Pyrenees
1. Many studies in northern Europe, North and South America, describe regional trends of population densification at altitudinal and polar tree lines during the 20th century. The purpose of this study was (1) to ascertain if this regeneration enhancement is present across the alpine ecotones of the Pyrenees, (2) if synchronous recruitment trends are common among the studied populations and (3) ...
متن کاملSpatiotemporal Variability in Tree Growth in the Central Pyrenees: Climatic and Site Influences
To understand how tree growth has responded to recent climate warming, an understanding of the tree–climate–site complex is necessary. To achieve this, radial growth variability among 204 trees established before 1850 was studied in relation to both climatic and site factors. Seventeen forest stands were sampled in the Spanish Central Pyrenees. Three species were studied: Pinus uncinata, Abies ...
متن کاملModeling human population patterns on tree density
In order to evaluate the possible correlation between the tree density and the human population density, the forested area in Nav Asalem district located in Guilan Province was selected. The descriptors of tree number and basal area per hectare as well as the stand density index were used to determine the tree density, which was conducted from a 2014 forest inventory including 62 cluster (558 p...
متن کاملComparison of δ(13)C and δ(18)O from cellulose, whole wood, and resin-free whole wood from an old high elevation Pinus uncinata in the Spanish central Pyrenees.
δ(13)C and δ(18)O values from sapwood of a single Pinus uncinata tree, from a high elevation site in the Spanish Pyrenees, were determined to evaluate the differences between whole wood and resin-free whole wood. This issue is addressed for the first time with P. uncinata over a 38-year long period. Results are also compared with published isotope values of α-cellulose samples from the same tre...
متن کاملSpatial variability and estimation of tree attributes in a plantation forest in the Caspian region of Iran using geostatistical analysis
This research was conducted to investigate spatial variability and estimate tree attributes in a plantation forest in the Caspian region of Iran using geostatistical analysis. Sampling was performed based on a 50m?125m systematic grid in a maple stand (Acer velutinum Boiss) 18 years of age using circular samples of 200m2 area. Totally, 96 sample plots were measured in 63 hectares and 14.25 he...
